Office Document Remediation
Make Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents accessible and compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508. Native Office remediation — the file stays in its original format, editable, reusable, and accessible.
What we fix in each format
Every format has its own accessibility surface. We use native Office libraries to write real accessibility attributes directly into the document, not generic metadata.
Word (.docx)
- Real Word Heading 1/2/3 styles (not just font size)
- Alt text on images and drawings
- Table header row flags (tblHeader)
- Document language and title metadata
- Semantic reading order preserved
Excel (.xlsx)
- Unmerge cells that break screen reader navigation
- Table header row flags
- Descriptive sheet names
- Alt text on images and charts
- Workbook language and title
PowerPoint (.pptx)
- Slide titles added to every slide (visible or screen-reader-only)
- Shape reading order corrected (title first, then top-to-bottom)
- Table header row flags
- Alt text on images, shapes, and decorative elements
- Removal of dangerous transitions and auto-advance timing
Why native Office remediation matters
Some vendors convert your Word/Excel/PowerPoint to PDF and call it accessible. That gives you a locked, read-only artifact your users can't edit. We don't do that.
No PDF conversion
Your Word document stays a Word document. Excel stays Excel. PowerPoint stays PowerPoint. Customers can still open, edit, and reuse the remediated file — it's not locked into a read-only PDF.
Native accessibility features
We use python-docx, openpyxl, and python-pptx to write real Microsoft Office accessibility attributes — heading styles, table header row flags, alt text attributes, language metadata. Assistive technology gets the full semantic structure.
AI-verified with Gemini
The same AI verification layer that powers our PDF remediation reviews Office documents too. Heading hierarchy, reading order, and image descriptions are checked by an LLM after the structural pass.
Same pricing, same SLA
Office remediation is billed at the same per-page rates as PDF — $0.30/page Standard, $1.80/page Enhanced, starting at $12/page Expert. No surcharge for Office formats.
How to remediate Office documents
1. Via the dashboard (recommended)
Sign in, go to Remediate, drag and drop your .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx files (or drop an entire folder). Processing happens through the same pipeline as PDFs — batch upload, real-time progress, per-file download.
2. Via the Docker agent (HIPAA / on-premise)
HIPAA-covered organizations deploy the on-premise Docker agent, which watches folders for new Office documents and remediates them in place without ever sending file content to CASO. The agent uses the same engine as the hosted service.
3. Via managed intake (no IT integration)
Can't deploy Docker and can't upload to the cloud? Our managed intake service accepts a ZIP of Office documents via a secure upload link. CASO staff processes them on secured hardware and sends you the remediated files via a signed download link.
